DEL VALLE, Texas — Del Valle Independent School District will be awarded the 2018 History Maker Award for honoring Newton Collins, a twice-freed slave who overcame arduous hurdles, valued education and gave back to the community, on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. at the Fairmont Hotel in downtown Austin presented by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

Del Valle ISD Board of Trustees President Rebecca Birch will be in attendance to accept the award on behalf of the District. With the naming of Newton Collins Elementary School, Del Valle ISD honored not only the Collins family, but generations of descendants of American slaves.

The History Maker Award honors businesses, community members, educational organizations and others whose contributions change the course of history or bring about significant awareness of the rich history of the communities in which we live and work.
