DEL VALLE, Texas – Del Valle Independent School District and the Junior League of Austin are kicking off ten years of partnership through the Food in Tummies (FIT) program on Friday, September 6. Each Friday, the program delivers backpacks containing healthy, shelf-stable food for all students at Baty and Hillcrest Elementary Schools to take home for the weekend.
The 2019-2020 school year program will launch with a FIT Pep Rally on Friday, September 6 at 9 AM at Baty Elementary School and at 1:30 at Hillcrest Elementary. The rallies will educate students about healthy nutrition choices and the FIT program.
“The program is very popular with our students,” said Baty Elementary School Parent Community Liaison Eva Rodriguez, “We have heard students say that one of their favorite days of the week is Friday because they get their FIT bag.”
“We are grateful for the Junior League’s commitment to serve our students and communities”, said Hillcrest Principal Jennifer Eberly, “Our partnership provides much excitement and anticipation for our students when receiving their weekly backpacks.”
The Junior League, consisting of 250 volunteers, pack and deliver the backpacks each week, then collect the empty bags and re‐packs them with food for the following week. Each backpack includes a flyer with healthy tips and other important information for students to share with their families. The FIT program also provides informational materials on bulletin boards at each of the campuses.
