The Del Valle Independent School District (DVISD) Board of Trustees approved the creation of a District Police Department at the February 18, 2020 Board meeting.

The approval by the Board begins a three-phase process with the goal of having a district police department in place by the start of the 2020-2021 school year. The district will now post a notice of approval and submit an application for certification to the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.

The DVISD Police Department, which will be led by a Police Chief, will be made up of all State of Texas licensed and tenured police officers. The Travis County Sheriff has been in contact with the district and has stated that the Travis County Sheriff’s Office will support DVISD through this transition and implementation.

1. Phase 1: February 19 – March 6 • This phase will inform the design of the new department and coordinate formal agreements with the City of Austin, Texas Department of Public Safety, Travis County Sheriff’s Office, and the Travis County Constable Precinct 4.
-These agreements will be signed by March 6, 2020.
-The district will receive the DVISD Police Safety and Security Department License Agency Number within approximately 30 days after the agreements are signed.

2. Phase 2: Mid-March 2020 • This phase will begin in mid-March of 2020.
-During this time the district will recruit and hire Texas Licensed Police Officers.

3. Phase 3: Mid-March 2020 – May 2020 • Newly hired Police Officers who have not had Student Resource Office (SRO) Training will receive a one-week SRO training.
-Del Valle ISD training on district policies and procedures will take place.
-DVISD SRO Resource Manuals and other documents will be created at this time.

The district’s new police force will align district policies and procedures with police department actions while continuing the same level of safety at all campuses. In addition to providing a high level of safety and security to our schools and students, the district Police Department will also provide cost savings to the taxpayers of the district. Startup costs will total $319,100, with recurring annual costs of about $654,000. This school year, the district will pay about $953,280 for Travis County Sheriff Office officers to work overtime, Summer School and athletic games and for seven officers to staff the secondary schools on a full-time basis.
