DEL VALLE, Texas – Baty Elementary School won the Bleed Orange, Live Green Zero Waste Award for their efforts to strive for zero-waste during the 2017-2018 academic school year through the Generation Zero program sponsored by Keep Austin Beautiful.

Baty will be awarded $500 on Friday, Oct. 12, and will be honored during The University of Texas vs. Baylor football game on Saturday afternoon.

Throughout the academic school year, first-grade students learned about what items go into the blue single-stream recycling bins, how to properly compost and how to care for their classroom worm composting bin.

First-grade students from Mr. George Marchetti’s class took turns monitoring their bins, rinsing the containers and guiding their peers to recycle correctly.

Other initiatives included a school-wide shift from Styrofoam to reusable lunch trays and an outdoor composting system maintained by the second and fifth graders.

The Baty Bobcats are making a difference in their community and setting an example of what it means to be #DVPROUD.
