DEL VALLE, Texas — Del Valle ISD is the only district in the Austin-area to provide kinder through second-grade students assistance in literacy with full-time and part-time staff members on all elementary campuses through the University of Texas’ Literacy First program.
Each of Del Valle ISD’s nine elementary campuses has two full-time and two part-time Literacy First staff members that assist students with one-on-one literacy assistance. The goal of Literacy First and Del Valle ISD is to get students to advance above their current reading level.
“It is important that we, the District and Literacy First, focus primarily on students to help them achieve and excel their literacy goals,” Deputy Superintendent Annette Villerot said. “I am extremely passionate about this program, and we are happy to give our students the gift of reading.”
Literacy First is a nonprofit program that assists students grades kinder through second to reach grade-level reading by third grade.
The Literacy First program started at Hornsby-Dunlap Elementary during the 2017-2018 academic school year. Students showed great progress and Del Valle ISD expanded the program to all elementary campuses during the 2018-2019 academic school year.
